New Family Planning Champion: Hajia Hauwa Musa

On Friday, November 24, 2020, the Delta State Advocacy Core Group decorated a Family Planning Champion, Hajia Hauwa Musa, with a call for couples to embrace modern childbirth spacing methods.
Decorating the Champion at the Sarkin Arewa Palace, Cable Point, Asaba, Mrs. Patience Eke, the Assistant Reproductive Health Coordinator for Delta State, said it has become imperative for couples to adopt child spacing methods to address Nigeria’s teeming population. Mrs. Eke opined that societal vices like armed robbery, prostitution and cultism can be prevented if parents have the number of children they can cater for. She stressed the need for men’s involvement in child spacing as it will help women who bear the risk of frequent child bearing, adding that the decision of family planning methods should be between couples.
The State Lead of The Challenge Initiative (TCI), Mrs. Nwanne Kalu, said the need for decorating family planning Champions was to raise voices in support of family planning. Mrs. Kalu added that a lot of rumours and misconception exist in the society about family planning which can be corrected when influential people speak in favour of it. According to the TCI State Lead, “When some people hear of family planning, they think it is to restrict or limit the number of children. Family planning is broad. It preaches childbirth spacing that allows the woman body to rest for some time after giving birth. Family planning has lot of benefits to everyone in the society”.
The Advocacy Core Group Chairperson, Barr. Mrs. Rachael Obodo-Obunseli, said the group choose Hajia Hauwa Musa as a Family Planning Champion in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the welfare and development of women and children. She said the group, through the support of The Challenge Initiative, have been able to recognise and decorate five (5) other champions in the state who are canvassing for the uptake of modern family planning methods among couples.
Responding, Hajia Hauwa Musa said she was delighted to be decorated as a family planning champion. She said the investiture was an additional call on her to do more, mostly in preaching the gains of family planning and noting that the importance of family planning cannot be overemphasised.
